Writing and Community

One of the most rewarding writing experiences I've had is leading workshops in underserved communities. I worked in senior centers, women's shelters, hospitals, and cultural centers to help participants find a creative outlet for their life experiences. We didn't stop with getting their stories down on the page. We published a literary journal and gave readings. To witness these writers reciting their words in a public forum was as empowering for me as it was for them.
